Committee Memberships and Other Opportunities

Committee Memberships and Other Opportunities

The business of the VCJC gets done, as per the by-laws, through the actions of the Board of Trustees. However, the real work, the planning and consideration, the day-to-day governance, and the idea generation responsibilities lie with the committees that report to the Board.  Committee membership is open to all interested VCJC members whether they are Board members or not.  Even the chairmanship of the committees is open to all.  With the start of a new Board term, it is time to reconstitute the committee memberships.  This does not mean that we are throwing people off of the committees!  It means that we are looking for interested and active participants in the many committees that help keep the VCJC viable, active, and moving forward.

If you are interested in interacting with your fellow VCJC members, helping shape its future, and helping keep it viable, this is your chance to get involved.  The time commitments are not large or onerous, but the rewards to you and the benefits to VCJC are valuable.  If you are interested in becoming a member of any of the following committees, please let us know.  You can send an email to info@vcjewishcenter.org or call the office.

Here’s the list of committees.

  • Finance & Administration – Deals w/ financial reports and investing funds along w/ supervising office staff and operation
  • House – Oversees the maintenance of the building and property. Responsible for adhering to city regulations.
  • Ritual & Cantorial – Responsible for proper religious observance and selecting a Cantor and other officiants for the High Holidays.
  • Fundraising – Develops ways to supplement revenues other than rents and membership and High Holiday ticket sales
  • Dinner/Journal – Select an honoree and caterer and be responsible for publishing the Journal w/ paid advertising.
  • Marketing Committee – Develops strategies for expanding membership and other programs to bring in people to VCJC.
  • Public Relations – Responsible for publicity of events and developing other means of communication.
  • Membership – Screens new applicants and expansion of membership.
  • Legal & By-law – Advises the Board on legal matters and changes to our By-Laws
  • Charity – Selects where funds are distributed based upon requests from various charities.
  • Website – Maintenance/updating VCJC website and design.
  • Education & Outreach/Events – Develops ideas for programs, lectures and enhances outreach of the community.

There is also another opportunity that we would like you to consider.  The Board has identified a route to increase both member and community involvement in the VCJC.  We are asking for one or more volunteers to develop this and make it a reality.  The basic idea is to create and maintain a discussion group that would meet regularly.  It could be a book club or a politics discussion group or a current events discussion group or a mix of all of these and more.  It will be up to those of you who rise to this occasion to formulate what the group does, how often it meets and what it actually does. I am not going to label this as a committee or a sub-committee of Education & Outreach/Events, but functionally, it is one of those.  The person or people doing this will report to the Board for plan approval and funding, if appropriate. As above, please respond to info@vcjewishcenter.org or the office.

Thanks and let us hear from you!
